David Whitman Receives Mortar Board Excellence in Advising Award

August 17, 2009 -UW College of Engineering and Applied Science, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor David Whitman, has been selected to receive the National Mortar Board's Excellence in Advising Award. Nominations for the Advising Award are submitted each year and the award is presented annually, at the national conference, to advisors who exemplify the ideals of Mortar Board by providing excellent service, guidance and support to a collegiate chapter.

A graduate of the University of Wyoming (B.S. electrical engineering 1975; Ph.D. in mineral engineering 1978) Whitman has been on the engineering faculty for 28 years, serving 16 years as assistant and associate Dean. He has been a Mortar Board advisor on the UW campus since 1993 and the students selected him as an honorary member in 1998 (it should be noted that when he was a collegiate senior, Mortar Board was a women’s organization only). Since 2000, Whitman has been the Section Coordinator (taking care of 8 chapters in Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah). The UW Chapter of Mortar Board is recognized nationally as an outstanding chapter – having received the Ruth Weimer Mount Award for best chapter during academic year 2007-2008.
