Barrett's Sixth Textbook in Press

October 12. 2009 -

Steve BarrettDr. Steve Barrett, Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, recently had his sixth textbook “Embedded Systems Design with the Atmel AVR Microcontroller” go to press with Morgan and Claypool Publishers.  The textbook will be released in January 2010.  Barrett has co-written the textbooks with close friend and former colleague Dr. Daniel Pack of the United States Air Force Academy, Colorado since 2000. The textbooks have been published by Pearson Prentice Hall and Morgan and Claypool publishers. The textbooks are used by a number of universities throughout the world.  One of their textbooks has been released as a Chinese edition as well as an edition for India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives.

Barrett considers textbook writing his hobby.  He does his writing between 4-6:00 A.M. every morning so as not to interfere with work and family commitments.  He has been keeping this schedule regularly since 1999.  He indicated it is a quiet time when you can get a lot done.  He further indicated that he and Pack make a good writing team because of similar work ethic, writing style, and complementary technical backgrounds.  He and Pack are already scouting textbook number seven – a second edition of one of their earlier Pearson Prentice Hall works.
