Conference Questions/Answers

Predesign:

-What is the diameter of the nylon cord?
-Are we allowed to tie our own knot in the cord to attach it to our structure?

Thank you for your help! We are looking forward to the conference.

Carly Hyatt
The cord is 9/64” diameter Venetian Blind Cord.
The cord will have a tied loop at the end, but you can attach it how you want as long as it can be removed within the time limit. Alternatively, you can attach your own cord to the loop with a hook.
Hello my name is Nate Owen and I am a member of ASCE at Utah State University. I am part of the pre-design team and we have a question about how the design will be scored. After looking at the mailer we see that the design is only judged using the time that it takes for the weight to be raised to the 4ft and 8ft mark. From the way that we understand it, it doesnt even have to stop, it just has to pass the 8ft mark in 16 seconds and the 4ft mark in 8 seconds. The mailer does not mention tolerances in stopping distance if stopping is required so we would like to have clarification.

Nate Owen
USU Pre-Design Team
Hello Nate,

The scoring is based on the time which the weight passes the marks. It is not required to stop there. We should have enough headroom (3-4 feet) over the 8 foot mark to allow the participants to stop the turbine.

Does that make sense?

Thomas Edgar

Bridge:

We have a couple concerns about the drawing you sent:
-Your dimensions for the "Bridge Dimenions" show the cantilever end toward the staging area. This does not comply to the National rules which show the cantilever on the far side of the river from the Construction area.

-Was the cofferdam simply omitted from your drawing, but will be marked in tape for the construction?

Thank you.
Alyssa Mustoe
Utah State University

Hello Alyssa,

The cantilever is not directed toward the staging area and is in fact on the far side of the river. The dimensions were taken from the national ‘Site and Bridge Diagram’. An example bridge is not drawn in, but in fact the layout is that in accordance with national.

Not all taped lines are shown on this drawing. It is intended to show the modifications in length. The Cofferdam is not included in this image but will be taped.

Paper:

For the non-technical and technical papers, are we allowed to have a powerpoint presentation, or is it a strictly oral presentation?

For the display for the concrete canoe, do we need to provide our own tables?

Thank you very much,

Carly Hyatt
BYU RMC Chair

Hello Carly,

We intend to have full capabilities for powerpoint for both the non-technical and technical paper presentations. So it will be the option of the author.

For the display for the concrete canoe, each team will need to provide their own tables.

See you soon,
Margaret
